SUSPENDED GARDENS
A Vertical and Continuous Green Typology in Dense Urban Fabric
In this project, the relationship between residential spaces and the public realm is radically re-imagined within one of Istanbul's most densely populated urban morphologies. 'Suspended Gardens' aims to integrate a continuous green spine into the graying periphery of the city by translating the traditional horizontal streetscape into a vertical plane.
The design does not merely consist of five individual buildings sitting adjacent to each other; rather, it functions as a single monolithic green mass on an urban scale, achieved through a continuous and fluid terracing system that interconnects the structures. The core morphology of the design—characterized by outward-protruding balconies and vertical garden axes—is parametrically oriented to minimize the local Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect while maximizing microclimatic comfort for the inhabitants.
Street Silhouette and Urban Integration: Front-to-Rear Street Relationships
The primary urban objective of the project is to revitalize the pedestrian circulation that is currently lost between the front and rear streets. In the sectional analyses, the level differences offered by the natural topography were utilized not as a disadvantage, but as architectural plateaus feeding the public courtyards on the ground floors.

The massing composition of the structures is carefully optimized to respect the existing building heights (gabarit) and the established street silhouette. The solid-void ratios within the facade morphology ensure maximum daylight penetration while its porous structure allows wind corridors to flow uninterrupted, thereby enhancing pedestrian comfort at the street level through passive microclimatic design.

Modular Flexibility and Typological Analysis
The interior layout of Suspended Gardens adopts flexible and modular plan schemes that respond directly to the changing living habits of contemporary urban society. By consolidating the circulation cores and structural systems at the center of the layouts, continuous and free-plan fields are achieved along the perimeter.

This structural flexibility allows the residential units to adapt and transform over time. The most characteristic elements of the structure—the undulating terraces—serve not only as aesthetic facade components but also as profound spatial thresholds bridging the interior with the exterior environment.

As each floor plate steps back and overlaps, the resulting self-shading mechanism directly contributes to passive cooling and sustainable building performance.
